11th part: Harvesting grapes

The grape harvest is something like a longed-for peak or one of the important milestones of the wine-growing year. The next is perhaps the bottling and the last is the tasting itself.

From the vineyards there is a commotion, often laughter, and the tanned faces of people who have come to help pick the grapes peek out from among the vine leaves. They are often members of the winemaker's family, friends, but also part-timers and volunteers, for whom skinning is an experience. The grape harvest is something like a longed-for peak or one of the important milestones of the wine-growing year. The next is perhaps the bottling and the last is the tasting itself. Before the skinning, the winemakers walk through the vineyards, check the health of the grapes and measure the sugar content. They chase away their eternal enemies - starlings and pray that the good weather will last for the peeler. The campaign, as the peeler is usually called, starts already in July and ends in January with the collection of frozen berries for the production of ice wines. It depends on the variety, the soil, the health of the grapes and their maturity. Large wineries harvest grapes mechanically with the help of a harvester, small winemakers roll up their sleeves and pick them by hand. Although it is laborious, it is gentle on the grapes - there is no mechanical damage and possible oxidation.
