Vineyard educational trail in Pezinok

Pezinok

In a town with a wine-growing tradition, such as Pezinok, there is an educational trail where everyone who is interested can learn more about the birth of the wine-growing tradition and the daily hard work of wine-growers.

Do you know what was denoted by the terms cutter, binder or kicker? What were the green robots and what was the meaning of top sensing? You will also learn about this on the Vinohradníck educational trail in the location of Stará hora (Altenberg) at the foot of the Lesser Carpathians. 14 information panels will accompany you on the 7 km long route.

The footpath is largely paved with asphalt because various mechanisms drive along the road during seasonal works. Small groves are built here - mostly made of wood, which were used in the same way as smaller stone buildings for storing tools and as a shelter from bad weather.

Stones that line terrain elevations are called alum or runes. These stone ramparts sometimes reach a height of 2 or 3 m and a width of 3 to 4 m. They are a remnant of the activities of winegrowers who occupied the slopes of the Lesser Carpathians from the 13th century and dug up the drifted stones when improving the soil.

The work of the winegrowers and their care of the vineyards was controlled by the mountain authority headed by the pereg, you can find out here. And all this under the patronage of St. Urbana. Who was this holy man is revealed by one of the plaques depicting what he looked like on the statue installed in 2018.

The educational trail also leads you into the world of varieties that have been cultivated here since time immemorial. A detailed map reveals the names of individual vineyards.

On the route, you will also come across a rocking well, the kind that were built in this neighborhood. The well served as a source of drinking water for the vintner, cattle and a source of water for "spraying". Near the wells there used to be concrete containers used for mixing protective sprays against pests. Those that have been preserved are characterized by the remains of paint from the blue rock.

On the route, you will also pass a pond, which the locals call Kejda. The tank was used for "slurry" farming, in which manure (slurry) was used to fertilize vineyards.

An interesting place in this area is undoubtedly the older of the two Calvaries in Pezinok, located in the dense forest on the southeastern slope of Suché vrch. It consists of three crosses, a chapel and newer symbolic tables with the numbers of the individual stations of the Way of the Cross. But that's not all - we can't reveal everything!

The vineyard educational trail begins in Pezinek at the so-called Manor path near Krížna Street, which is perpendicular to it. When planning a trip, you have to take into account that it is not circular.
