The story about the gallery named after the well-known ceramist must start with him. Where did he become interested in working with clay? Who influenced him and showed him the direction? What led his steps to Modra, in which he spent a large part of his creative life?
His birthplace already had a fundamental influence on little Ignác. He was born in 1922 into a family with Haban roots and grew up on a Haban court in Košolna in western Slovakia. And it was the Habanis - in other words, the New Christians, who always had a good time with clay. As a child, little Ignác took part in archaeological research focused on ceramics, which was carried out in Košolna by the legendary ceramist Heřman Landsfeld. It all started here and continued at the Ceramic School in Modra, where he found his new home. Ignác Bizmayer was particularly attracted by figurative work, and in order to process it as faithfully as possible, he traveled a lot in Slovakia and studied. The habits of ordinary people and their everyday life became the basis of his work. It reflects the departing "old world," which today's young generation knows only from memorial films and narratives. In addition, he concentrated on ceramic sculpture and utilitarian decorative ceramics in his work. An attentive eye will appreciate how he was able to portray saints, musicians, winegrowers and craftsmen.
Among his most famous works are the cycle "Vinohradnícky rok" from 1954-1958 and "Vinohradnícka lajtra" from 1986. You can admire the works of master Bizmayer in the Ľudovít Štúr Museum and the Ignác Bizmayer Gallery located in the rotunda bastion of Modransk. It has been preserved as part of the city fortifications since the 17th century. It has been the seat of the gallery, which is part of the SNM – Museum of Ľudovít Štúr in Modra and the Museum of Slovak Ceramic Sculpture, since 1994. Here you will see a representative selection of the works of Ignác Bizmayer, an author of a famous name, who, however, will no longer expand this collection. He left this "new world" at a respectable age in 2019.
