To pieces

27. 5. 2023  15:00 - 22:00

Pezinok

This year's season at Schaubmar's mill in Pezinok will traditionally begin with a new exhibition project, this time dedicated to sculptural art. Opening of the exhibition To pieces with a subtitle Fragment and torso in visual arts complements the first curatorial interpretation, the program for children, a workshop for adults and concerts by young musicians Čavalenka, Vojtik and IAmNøt. All this will happen already on Saturday, May 27, 2023 from 15.00.

The sculptural exhibition of mainly three-dimensional works explores torsoness and fragmentaryness in visual arts across several centuries. Symbolically represented works from ancient art will be seen by visitors in contrast with modern and contemporary art, which shows the popularity of the human torso in modern sculpture.

In the authentic exhibition spaces of Schaubmar's mill, mainly material works and objects from various historical periods and media will be exhibited, supplemented by artistic and documentary photography, experimental film, action and installation. The rich selection includes works by authors such as Jozef Jankovič, Milota Havránková, Bohumil Kafka, Martin Piaček and Erna Masarovičová, as well as many others.

What is a fragment for history and the present, and how and what can we read in it, the curator of the exhibition from SNG Vladimíra Büngerová explains: "A fragment, a part, a fraction or a torso shows a body and a thing that is injured, deformed, incomplete, imperfect, but also the beauty in desolation', an image of death, tragedy, revolution, erotica, memento and absence. At the same time, it has the ability to influence our imagination, with the help of which we can complete the missing part, search for meaning when the whole is unknown."

The exhibition, which will last until April 28, 2024, will be able to be read by the audience in connection with the present time. "Sociologists evaluate the current society as dismembered, fragmented, parceled out, broken, unclear and disjointed. According to contemporary philosophy, the whole is less than the sum of its parts, and the whole is not the truth. We could look at the pieces, parts, fragments, torsos concentrated in one installation as a current image of the state of society before the gates of the end of the world," explains Büngerová.

A catalog is also being published to accompany the exhibition, which will be available for purchase at the Schaubmar mill, at the Ex Libris bookstore in SNG and at the SNG e-shop.
