Modra

Modra

A city where you can discover, get to know and taste, have fun and especially enjoy life! "Carpe diem" literally applies in Modra - "Enjoy the day"!

Modra welcomes and entertains everyone: whether you love nature, adventure, history, traditions and art, you like quality wines or long for gastronomic heaven. But where to start? It's a good idea to plan your time in Modra in advance, as there is a surprising amount to do.

The town comes alive several times a year during various events connected with the presentation of wine. Popular tastings in courtyards, cellars and wineries have an exceptional and very friendly atmosphere. Come, for example, to the Day of open cellars or Open cellars on St. Urbana!

If you don't have time then, don't worry - you can taste the colors and aromas of this region all year round in local wine shops and restaurants.

In the city, which became famous for the production of majolica, you can take an excursion and workshop behind the pottery circle in the Slovak folk majolica. We also recommend visiting the Ignác Bizmayer Gallery - the founder of Slovak ceramics. Ceramic design workshop MODRANSKA continues the ceramic tradition in its original way. For art, you won't have to go far to the Zoya Museum with an important collection of works by the world pop artist of Slovak origin, Andy Warhol. You can enjoy modern art in connection with delicious wines in the Elesko wine park.

The sights add to the charm of Modra, among which are undoubtedly the remains of the city walls and the Upper Gate. Sacred monuments are dominated by the German Evangelical Church, the Church of St. Štefan Kráľ and the Church of St. John the Baptist. A reference to the life of the Jewish community is the synagogue - today serving as a private studio and a Jewish cemetery. A rare monument is also the Modran manor house with an ornamental garden, which is the seat of the Cultural and Creative Center for Lesser Carpathians. The face of Modra was shaped, for example, by the father of Slovak architecture – DS Jurkovič, who is behind, among other things, the project of the local orphanage and the designs for the office buildings on Zochová street. It is named after Samuel Zoch, an important politician and public official who worked as an evangelical pastor in Modra. And when we have already mentioned Jurkovič and Zoch, it should be said that Modra is also forever connected with Ľudovít Štúr. The codifier of literary Slovak and a leading national revivalist died here in 1856. We invite you to visit his Memorial Room.

There is no shortage of hiking trips in Modra and its surroundings, and cycling is extremely popular. The nearby Harmónia recreation area is a popular recreation area, from where you can further reach the Piesok area with the historic Huncokár cemetery. The entire location is criss-crossed with hiking trails and cycle paths, a natural swimming pool operates in the summer, and you can ski here in the winter. Popular tourist spots are the Veľká Homoľa Lookout, Čermákova lúka, Zámčisko, Skalnatá, Čmeľok, Kukla or Medvedia skala.
