Slovak folk majolica

Modra

A fragile, yet strong material - such is ceramics, which gives soul to the entire region under the Little Carpathians. Masters of their craft have been creating their works of plastic here for centuries. Under the banner of Slovak folk majolica since 1888.

It takes a while before a new work is born from the clay. You can read a lot about this process or experience it yourself. We recommend the latter, because an educational excursion or workshop directly in the workshop is a very pleasant and especially unforgettable experience. Spinning the potter's wheel and trying to conquer the clay is a challenge for both young and old! However, before an original jug, cup or vase is created, the clay must dry, and only then does the raw shard go into the kiln for its first firing. However, before it gets to its second - final firing, the durable and porous ceramic shard must be covered with glaze. In the Slovak folk majolica workshop, they will be happy to show you their kumšt: all products from there are made and painted by hand.

Each piece is a unique work, which is also why Modranská majolica and majolica ornamentation are included in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovakia.

Natural motifs traditionally appear in useful and decorative items from this workshop: roses, cloves, flower buds decorated with leaves, vines, animals, but also events from people's lives. They stand out on the white background glaze in four color variants, but in 2019 new patterns were added to the traditional ones - blue feather, purple spike and burgundy ticket. The modern design of ceramics, which arose from the successful collaboration of Slovak folk majolica with the Modran creative studio Design friendly, is a guarantee that there is something to look forward to in the future as well.
