Svätý Jur

Svätý Jur

In recent years, the town under the slopes of fertile vineyards has been of particular interest to lovers of wine, history and tourism. Its charming historic core, beautifully reconstructed monuments, local gastronomy, tastings with local winemakers and several tourist destinations in the vicinity - you too can experience all this under the protection of the patron saint of the Jurans - St. George.

The territory of St. George was sporadically settled already in the period before the birth of Christ. The first really major discovery from the period of our era is the discovery of the Great Moravian fortress, which was built in the second half of the 9th and the beginning of the 10th century. Slavs lived in a place known as Neštich, but it turns out that the settlement of this area dates back to the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age. Meanwhile, the location hidden in the woods was used by different cultures.

Svätý Jur has long been associated with wine production, documented by records dating back to 1209. The town went through various historical stages during which it tried to break free from serfdom, fought against enemy troops or natural elements. St. George's fight for full legal status ended in 1647, when Ferdinand III. elevated to the status of free royal cities. Winemakers prospered significantly at the time when the Turks occupied the south, which led to changes in the wine market. At the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, the expulsion of the Turks from the southern regions put viticulture into a crisis. Competition in the form of cheap wines and other factors led to the impoverishment of the population. But the wine industry survived and is experiencing its heyday again today. In 1997, it was even possible to restore the Svätojurský vinohradnícky spolok, which is actively involved in the activities of the Malokarpatská vínna cesta association.

The town with part of the preserved city walls is dotted with monuments. The Svätojurský educational trail, consisting of two parts: an urban and a natural circuit, will take you through the best-preserved wine-growing town in Slovakia and its surroundings. During your visit, you will not be short of excellent gastronomy, small sweet delights of confectioners, or traditional wine tastings in the St. George's cellars. They will gladly give you all the necessary information at the Tourist Information Center here.
